Over the last few weeks, there have been all kinds of rumors about who might be making up the main cast of The Fantastic Four when the movie eventually gets its long-awaited reboot. Just last week, two members of the team were supposedly outed, and now it appears a third name is making the rounds.

However, the latest whisperings are a bit more interesting since they also include a crossover that could serve as a vehicle for bringing the superhero quartet into being. According to the DisInsider show, there has been quite a bit of rumbling lately that How I Met Your Mother alum Segel has been picked to take on the role of Ben Grimm, otherwise known as The Thing. Should that rumor be accurate, it means Segel could join the likes of Penn Badgley, who has been at the center of his own rumors as talk has heated up that he’ll play Reed Richards, a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic.
The other big tidbit from DisInsider’s Skyler Shuler and Derek Cornell was that fans might not have to wait until The Fantastic Four hits theaters to see what Segel as Ben Grimm will look like. They reported that they’ve heard Segel is set to make an appearance in the Disney Plus series She-Hulk. However, the pair were quick to offer the disclaimer that it’s not clear whether Segel is going to be The Thing in both the show and the movie or whether he might be a multiversal version of the character who could eventually change from small-screen to the big-screen.
Segel is the third member of the team who has been getting quite a bit of talk in the last few days and weeks. Right around the same time Badgley’s started circulating, there were also whispers that 50 Shades vet Jamie Dornan had been tagged to play Johnny Storm, otherwise known as The Human Torch.
It’s certainly not out of the question that the comedic actor could simply be making an appearance in the Disney Plus series, considering Marvel Studios has already introduced a member of the Fantastic Four knowing all along that he wouldn’t continue on in that role. John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic in Doctor Strange 2 was more fan-service than tipping of the hand regarding future plans by Marvel Studios.
Fantastic Four is in development at Marvel Studios.
