The series itself was well-received by fans for its sharp animation and the way that characters, stories, and especially Pokemon battles were portrayed. As most fans of the Pokemon anime know, the way battles are portrayed and some of the methods Ash uses don’t really follow the game’s logic. However, even after 3 years of the series being released, one Reddit user has found a neat little Easter Egg hidden in the middle of episode 4, “The Lake of Rage.”

Similar to how the recently announced Twilight Wings series will focus on characters from the Galar region, Pokemon Generations focuses on a variety of characters from 6 different regions. The reference mentioned above involves the Kanto and Johto elite four leader, Lance and his companion Dragonite.

The episode revolves around the Lake of Rage, a location found in the Johto region which players will know as the home of the legendary red Gyarados. Lance heads to the Lake of Rage to scout out Team Rocket who are using it as a base of operations, forcing Lance to promptly put a stop to their plans.

During the episode, Lance battles a group of Team Rocket grunts, using Pokemon like Raticate, Grimer, and Magnemite. In one scene, Lance’s Dragonite looks to be using the move Flamethrower, making swift work of the grunts’ Pokemon. All except for one: Magnemite, who gets up for a moment only to be knocked out moments later by a second attack, Dragon Tail.

One Reddit user, skyfall91401, points out that the reason that Magnemite is able to pop back up after getting hit with a move its weak to, is because of one of Magnemite’s abilities: Sturdy. Sturdy is an ability that allows a Pokemon to hang on with 1 HP left after getting hit with an attack that would knock it out in one hit.

It’s a really nice little reference that many fans would likely not notice, but hardcore players would possibly recognize or acknowledge. This is just one of the many examples that highlights why fans of the series really enjoyed the Pokemon Generations shorts, and why some fans don’t really bother watching the main Pokemon anime. With the first images of actual episodes of the newest series surfacing, maybe hardcore fans of the game series will find something to like about Ash’s newest adventure.
